I have seen too many brilliant young teachers leave the profession since my PGCE in 2013. Why did they leave the profession? Almost all left because of 1. behaviour (a blog for another time) and 2. workload.

Now it is worth saying, I am a self-confessed workaholic. If it was up to me I would probably still be sitting in school talking about our KS3 curriculum. So as an NQT it was not unheard of for me to work into the early hours with a large stack of marking. As Joe Kirbyhas rightfully said, in reality the impact to workload ratio is hopelessly inefficient.[1] The difference from when I entered teaching is marking expectations are changing. Ofsted have changed their inspection requirements on marking (see Ofsted November 2016 update here) and the writing of others cited in this post shows there are more work-savvy alternatives.
