As a language teacher, the goal is for students to spontaneously use target language (TL), in whatever form; a simple ‘Bonjour’ to a ‘je pense que cette image est très intéressante’. Even if it’s just a ‘je suis en retard, veuillez m’excuser monsieur’. Ok, so latter is subjunctive but still, the point stands.
I am the first to admit that I don’t use enough TL in the classroom. BUT I want to. However it needs to be carefully planned and focused. Ofsted have remarked that use of TL in the classroom needs developing and has dropped significantly in the last 20 years. I suspect that may have a little to do with the ridiculous controlled assessments stipulated by the exam boards but even so, that’s not excuse. Thankfully, the GCSE spec is changing. TL is crucial.
